Types of Sexual Harassment
Sexual harassment can vary largely from situation to situation; however, it usually takes one of two forms.
Sexual harassment can be described as:
- Harassment leading to a hostile environment: When another individual's actions are sexual in nature, severe, and pervasive, it creates a hostile environment. It does not mean that sexual favors are being requested, but only that the conduct goes beyond workplace propriety and is of a sexual nature.
- Quid pro quo harassment: When another individual specifically asks for sexual favors in return for some sort of benefit to the employee, such as a promotion or raise, the harassment is described as quid pro quo.
In order for a workplace to be considered a “hostile environment”, the employee must have repeatedly dealt with inappropriate actions or comments. In a “quid pro quo” situation, one occurrence would be sufficient in order for the action to be legally acknowledged as sexual harassment.
